Doxastic Paradoxes without Self-Reference

چکیده

Certain doxastic paradoxes (paradoxes analogous to the Paradox of the Liar but involving ideal belief instead of truth) demonstrate that some formal paradoxes cannot be avoided simply by limiting the expressiveness of one's formal language in order to exclude the very possibility of self-referential thoughts and beliefs. These non-selfreferential paradoxes, moreover, should be of special interest to such investigators of rationality as game theorist, economists and cognitive psychologists, since they occur more frequently in the world beyond the G~deltheorist's laboratory.

The Preface, the Lottery, and the Logic of Belief

John Locke proposed a straightforward relationship between qualitative and quantitative doxastic notions: belief corresponds to a sufficiently high degree of confidence. Richard Foley has further developed this Lockean thesis and applied it to an analysis of the preface and lottery paradoxes. Following Foley’s lead, we exploit various versions of these paradoxes to chart a precise relationship ...

Inclosures, Vagueness, and Self-Reference

In this paper, I start by showing that sorites paradoxes are inclosure paradoxes. That is, they fit the Inclosure Scheme which characterizes the paradoxes of self-reference. Given that sorites and self-referential paradoxes are of the same kind, they should have the same kind of solution. The rest of the paper investigates what a dialetheic solution to sorites paradoxes is like, connections wit...

Eliminating Self - Reference from Grelling ’ s and Zwicker ’ s Paradoxes

The goal of this paper is to present Yabloesque versions of Grelling’s and Zwicker’s paradoxes concerning the notions of “heterological” and “hypergame” respectively. We will offer counterparts of these paradoxes that do not seem to involve self-reference or vicious circularity.

Curry’s Revenge: the costs of non-classical solutions to the paradoxes of self-reference

The paradoxes of self-reference are genuinely paradoxical. The liar paradox, Russell’s paradox and their cousins pose enormous difficulties to anyone who seeks to give a comprehensive theory of semantics, or of sets, or of any other domain which allows a modicum of self-reference and a modest number of logical principles. One approach to the paradoxes of self-reference takes these paradoxes as ...

PhD Dissertation: Propositional Reasoning that Tracks Probabilistic Reasoning

Bayesians model one’s doxastic state by subjective probabilities. But in traditional epistemology, in logic-based artificial intelligence, and in everyday life, one’s doxastic state is usually expressed in a qualitative, binary way: either one accepts (believes) a proposition or one does not. What is the relationship between qualitative and probabilistic belief? I show that, besides the familia...
